It’s been too long since I’ve written anything, trying to put one word in front of the other felt like it was torcher for me. The last thing I wanted to do was put it down and forget about it for a while, but reluctantly did knowing I could forget the whole story, the last chapter I wrote. Six months later I realized the longer I waited for words to come flowing back the more I dreaded sitting down and writing. I started to read what I had already written I thought it was horrible, but they do say you are your worst critique. So instead of just reading what I’ve written and write from there. I’m going to start from the beginning all over again starting with the characters, get to know them better, than just the way they look or dress. It is going to be a lot more work but it will be worth it in the end making it better than before. You maybe thinking that’s not what you should do. You should go from where you left off and don’t edit or change anything in the first draft. And you would be right you shouldn’t do that but, I feel like I’ve lost connection with my story and characters and the only way to get back to where I was is to start all the way over. Changing Directions in the middle of a story does make you feel like you’ve wasted so much time and energy. At times it will make you feel discouraged just like writing a new book will. Feeling ready to write is an amazing feeling. It won’t carry you through the whole process of writing it, but determination, hard work and consistency will. I know what I’ve gone through is what they call a burn out or writers block. I didn’t take the necessary steps to step back from my writing on the weekends or when I felt like I needed a break, I kept going. The last six months I’ve learned you need breaks on any job or hobby you have or else it’s not fun when you feel burned out on work or doing the same routine over and over again. Taking a six month break is getting me back to where I was and want to be again. Do you ever get burned out because you don’t take breaks? Sometimes we do need to relax and put on our favorite move or show and pop popcorn.
There’s nothing wrong with going back and editing while you’re drafting… I do it all the time! Just do whatever feels right, in order to write. Good luck, and write on!
